NBA Game Time 2010/2011 (v2.2)

Picked by: PatrickJ

Not the most exciting of apps in its basic, free version – but if you’re a big NBA fan (guilty) and are willing to fork out $9.99 for Game Time Plus as an in-app purchase it becomes quite good. The video highlights for each game are pretty extensive, at around two minutes each. Honestly, I’d almost buy this just for all the Blake Griffin monster slams this year. 🙂

Free, but $9.99 (iTunes link) for Game Time Plus upgrade

Best Skins Ever

If you like or use some of the more expensive “wet application” screen or full device protectors, you’re gonna love this. While made from the same types of materials, Best Skins Ever are a much less expensive version of these protectors. They come in a simple envelope, foregoing the packaging, squeeges, or little spray bottles of their competetors. As long as you can come up with these little details on your own (which is very easy to do), and follow some simple steps in the company’s YouTube instructional video, then you can save a lot of money. How much? Here are a few of their low prices:
iPhone 4 or iPod Touch Full Body- $8.99
iPhone 4 or iPod Touch Screen Only- $6.99
iPad Full Body- $18.99
iPad Screen Only- $13.99
As you can see, these prices are quite a bit lower than the competition. Besides these examples, they also have skins for the iPod Nano, iPod Classic, and several MacBooks, so whatever Apple products you own, Best Skins Ever has you covered. You can check out the sale here.

I Said What?! Recorder & Editor (v1.8)

Picked by: Jay

I_Said_What

I spent 5 days at a conference last week hearing some great presenters. As much as I enjoy the learning and the being there in the moment, two weeks later there are only pieces of inspirational talk and information that remain in my head. And give it a month, and all I can say is, “yeah, I saw that person speak once!”

So I decided to use a dictation-type of recorder for the iPhone. I settled on I Said What?! Recorder & Editor (or the free version ISW Recorder & Editor) by Tapparatus. What an amazingly powerful little app. What makes this so powerful is that it has features that other more pricey apps don’t even offer – for example, you can snip, edit, and rearrange audio snippets to play differently! And like the reviews mention, the quality is fantastic.

Don’t ask me about export options because I don’t know about them yet (I intend to listen to the recordings on my iPhone anyway). It appears that is one area where the $0.99 version and free version differ. I only wish I’d bought the full version because I have a full conference of speakers and audio on the free version!!

If you find yourself wanting a dictation or audio recorder, I highly recommend the strangely named I Said What?! Recorder & Editor.

Infinity Blade (v1.0)

Picked by: Brandon

Infinity_Blade

This screenshot is fitting… because if you buy Infinity Blade you’ll be asking yourself “What the heck have I done with the past few hours?!”

I’m not going to call Infinity Blade the best game of the year, because it clearly at this point is not as there’s titles on my iPhone that have been there for a lot longer and get a lot more play time. It has the best graphics of the year without a doubt, but its lacking a bit in the long term replay area because honestly you can only dodge and swipe so many times before it gets a bit repetitive. In this aspect its a lot like Rage HD, where the monsters are always in the same spot and once you master it… the boring sets in. It is my pick of the week however simply because its one of those “must have” games if you’re rocking an iP4. Graphically there is nothing better out there to demo what the iPhone is capable of and at the same time it really is a solid game. I’ve played it almost all the way through (I’m at a level 37) and it still hasn’t gotten overly boring because there’s a drive in me to collect and master all the weapons. But once I’ve done that, I have a feeling it will sit quietly in the background waiting for updates and for me to use it as a “look what the iPhone can do”.

So, Infinity Blade is my pick of the week. Grab it from the app store, waste a bunch of hours and marvel at the beauty while slashing the hell out of some dammed ugly trolls and gorgeous fiends. Just don’t plan on it having the staying power of Flight Control.

CalenGoo (sync with Google Calendar™) v1.5.9

Picked by: Renkman

CalenGoo

I’m always on the hunt for the next best calendar application.  My wife and I have very hectic schedules, like most of us do these days.  Add to that, the increasingly busy schedule our kids have added to our daily routines, and it’s easy to see how activities and deadlines are bound to get lost in all the chaos.  Enter CalenGoo, the strangely named powerful calendar that is designed for both the iPad and the iPhone.  The name aside, I was initially put off by the price tag of this app.  There are many calendar apps out there that cost much less—some even free!  However, a friend highly recommended it, so I thought I would give it a try.  If you use Google Calendar you will already be familiar with the presentation.  You can synch multiple Google Calendar’s at a time—a big plus for us. For those of you wanting to tinker with every little detail, you can do that too, from the font size and type, to the color and multiple synching options. I am thrilled to have a way to keep all of our calendars in one place that is powerful enough for my needs, yet user friendly enough that my wife is not put off by its complexity. Although I have tried other calendar apps since purchasing CalenGoo, I always seem to come back to it in the end.  Why don’t you give it a try, too!
