Sony EU recently announced their intention to release a Playstation app for iPhone, although the first release will hit the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and The Netherlands “very soon”.
You don’t see names of small countries like Canada and the US in there because it’s the european Playstation blog, but also because they’re not releasing the app in North America right now. That’s alright, though, fellow North Americans, because you likely won’t care very much about what this app has to offer, even if you do own a PSP or PS3.
First of all, it doesn’t seem like the PS app plays games. This move actually makes sense because it’s much easier to simply launch a game from the Springboard, but this might confuse many users who know the Playstation as something — y’know — plays games.
Secondly, the mockups looks very much like a dashboard for a mobile device, or a specially optimized mobile website for keeping up to date with friends’ statuses and game-related info. In other words, its usefulness sounds nominal at best, and I doubt I’d even bother with the download, unless it allowed me to buy games for my Sony consoles right from my iPhone.
