Real Racing 2 was released on the App Store for $9.99 a few days ago, effectively kicking my dust-covered PSP right in the Bejewels. I’ve played only a handful of races this this weekend, but I’m already hooked (and I’m not even normally a racing fan).
There are a lot of amazing things that Firemint has done with this title, but one of the most impressive by far is that they’ve really taken advantage of all the things that their game engine can do. I say this in light of very impressive, but seemingly very shallow games like Infinity Blade (which is built on Epic’s Unreal engine).
Firemint could easily have stopped with their Gran Turismo-like graphics and called it a day, but Real Racing 2 packs a *lot* of incredible content. There are 15 tracks and 30 cars to unlock in career mode, and the 16-player online multiplayer mode sounds like it should be a blast (though servers are being slammed right now — I got kicked from my first and only game just after I got into first place!).
I also just love the ebb and flow of every single race. The bulky starter Volvo I’m driving around really feels like it has some weight to it, and I’m even starting to get a handle on when my wheels start to spin out on me after a turn (although they wouldn’t do that if I was a half decent driver). I can’t attest to how realistic the game is because I haven’t ever driven over 10 mph, but the sense of the fine balance and control required to drive a car well around a corner at 120 mph is very evident in Real Racing 2 — and it makes for an incredibly rewarding challenge.
I’m playing the game on medium difficulty with the steering and brake assists turned off, but Firemint also managed to make the game very friendly to casual players, as well. Simply crank brake assist up to max and all you need to do is steer and enjoy the sense of speed.
All the gaming and iPhone-related blogs are saying this right now, but it is true: if you like the idea of serious racing action on your iOS device, you’re going to want to download Real Racing 2. It’s worth all 999 pennies that Firemint is asking for in exchange.
