Some App Developers and Apple Being Sued Over User Information Sharing with Advertisers

iphone-4-low-signal.jpgBloomberg is reporting that several big-name iOS app developers, along with Apple are being sued over their sharing of personal information with advertisers that were working through said developers apps.
Here’s an excerpt:

The complaint, which seeks class action, or group, status, was filed on Dec. 23 in federal court in San Jose, California. The suit claims Cupertino, California-based Apple’s iPhones and iPads are encoded with identifying devices that allow advertising networks to track what applications users download, how frequently they’re used and for how long.

“Some apps are also selling additional information to ad networks, including users’ location, age, gender, income, ethnicity, sexual orientation and political views,” according to the suit.

Some of the developers being sued are behind some of the following apps: Pandora Radio, The Weather Channel, Dictionary.com and Paper Toss. Specifically, these companies are accused of transmitting Unique Device Identifiers (UDIDs) from the users’ device to advertisers. These UDIDs are unique, uh, identifiers specific to every device, and users can’t stop the transmission of this data to Apple or others. That’s where the problem lies.
