DropPhox is a super-handy new iPhone app that’s hit the App Store this week. It does one simple thing, but one incredibly useful simple thing if you’re a user of the superb Dropbox file sync service – it automatically sends photos to Dropbox as you take them.
Here are its key features:
- DropPhox transfer starts as soon as you snap the camera shutter.
- Multiple photographs are uploaded in parallel as you take them.
- Photos taken offline are uploaded as soon as a 3G/WiFi connection is detected.
- You can also set DropPhox to Autosave photos to your device’s camera roll.
- Supported in-camera Flash, Focus and Video
I’ve been testing out DropPhox a little this morning, and it works just as advertised and very nicely.
Some quick things to note about the app:
— It doesn’t work with photos taken from the built-in Camera app. A bit of a shame, but likely not something that Apple allows at this point I suppose. So you need to use the camera function within DropPhox itself – but it looks and appears to work exactly the same as the standard Camera app, so not a huge deal.
— The app seems to upload pictures at their full size and resolution. Here’s the info for one I uploaded earlier – as you can see it’s 2592X1936 and nearly 6MB in size:
— The app creates its own /DropPhox folder within Dropbox – so it’s dead easy to find your latest snaps.
— Uploads are quite quick – and you can carry on snapping while earlier shots are uploading.
— The ‘Use’ button can appear almost unresponsive for a bit when you have just taken a photo and are choosing to use it or not, but it’s getting the upload started – just give it a moment and you’ll return to the camera to start snapping again.
From what I’ve seen so far I think this is a great little utility for anyone using an iPhone and Dropbox. (Note: it does require an iPhone 3GS or 4 or an iPod Touch 4G). It’s a great way to have all your iPhone snaps almost instantly on your PC and saved to the cloud.
You can find DropPhox in the App Store now, priced at $1.99.
