Apple Looking for New CFO?

Tosi_Lawrence_Photo.jpgBloomberg is reporting that Apple may be looking for a new Chief Financial Officer. Three of their sources have claimed that Apple had asked Laurence Tosi, the CFO of Blackstone Group, (an investment firm) if he wanted the CFO position. Tosi of course, would be replacing current CFO Peter Oppenheimer who has held that roll at Apple since 2004.

There is a hitch however. Tosi has told Blackstone management that he intends to stay with the company. Plus, in an unusual turn of events, Apple has stated that Oppenheimer is happy at the company, and they are not searching for a new CFO.

Tosi told Blackstone CEO Stephen Schwarzman that he plans to stay, rather than join Apple, said two of the people, who asked not to be identified because the talks were private. Steve Dowling, a spokesman for Apple, said the company is “not conducting a CFO search.” Current CFO Peter Oppenheimer “loves the company and is extremely happy in his role,” Dowling said.

Yeah, after a smash hit year like 2010, I’m sure Apple is really displeased with Oppenheimer. Besides, I’m no lawyer, but I’m pretty sure Apple couldn’t outright lie about this even if they wanted to.

The only argument for Oppenheimer’s replacement might come from his lack of experience with acquisitions. Why do I say that? Well, if Apple really is interested in Tosi, that’s his speciality- acquisitions. If that’s the case, Apple is looking to acquire something big, and they’re wanting someone with greater expertise on hand.

In short, file this one away, but I’m not to sure I’d bet heavily on it.
