Apple Now Matching AT&T, Lowers iPhone 3GS Price to $49 [UPDATE]

cheap3gs234234234.jpgJust days after AT&T lowered the price of the iPhone 3GS from $99 to the new price of $49, Apple is now following suit and has lowered the price of the iPhone 3GS thought their own retail outlets. The very quiet announcement comes less than 24 hours ahead of what is expected to be the Verizon iPhone announcement.

This is an interesting turn of events. Apple is following suit, and lowering the price, but why? Yes, selling units is selling units, and they’re glad to have your business, but to my eyes, it almost looks like a defensive move. Plus, these price drops are only being seen in the States, which further points to a Verizon announcement.

Which brings me to the point of AT&T. Like, I’ve said in previous posts, AT&T is doing this as a competitive edge agains Verizon. Want an iPhone but don’t want to spend a lot of money up front? Then AT&T is your only option.
If AT&T can hook you with a $50 iPhone, then they’ve got you signed to their service for two years, and that’s two years that Verizon can’t get your business.

[UPDATE] The more I think about it, perhaps Apple is lowering the price of the iPhone 3GS in an attempt to force Verizon to pay a large subsidy to keep the iPhone 4’s price on their network, in line with what they are selling for on AT&T’s network.
