Four years ago yesterday Steve Jobs unveiled the first iPhone at Macworld. I can remember exactly where I was, as I followed Engadget’s liveblog of the event with my excitement growing by the minute.
I had been mostly a fan of Windows Mobile smartphones and mobile devices until that day, but I knew when we saw that first presentation of the iPhone that it was going to blow away all the existing competition. Here’s my first, gushing, post about it back on that day: http://justanothermobilemonday.com/Wordpress/2007/01/09/iphone-forget-all-others/
Now four years down the line, and with four models of the iPhone having been released, I think that as a device, and certainly as a platform (iOS), it has mostly lived up to its great promise and hype. It took quite a while, but now there is some real competition for the iPhone – in terms of design and UI and apps etc. That’s good to see, but it should also be remembered just how huge a game-changer the iPhone has been in these four years.
To illustrate that, just take a moment and think on …
— How many leading smartphones don’t now have a large screen as one of their main features? None did before the iPhone.
— How many use a touch interface? None did before the iPhone.
— How many now have their own app store on device, to make app discovery and delivery to users simple and appealing? None did before the iPhone.
Ever since the iPhone launched, every other major player in the smartphone space has scrambled to copy nearly everything about it, and to match up to it.
Happy Birthday iPhone.
