AppleInsider is reporting that Gene Munster, a Piper Jaffray analyst, has release a note stating that he expects Apple iPhone sales to jump 2.5 million units, specifically stating that AT&T will sell 11 million iPhones, and Verizon selling another 9 million.
Munster expects Verizon to activate 25 million smartphones in total, and if 9 million of those are iPhones, that’s an incredible 36% of the smartphone activations for 2011. Compare that to the record 5 million iPhones that AT&T activated during the September quarter of 2010, that accounted for 80 of the smart phones sold by AT&T.
In short, Verizon has quite a bit to gain, and AT&T has a lot to lose.
Anyway, in a show of what looks to be desperation, AT&T has boasting that their network is faster than the competition in the U.S. Plus, AT&T spokesman stated (to Silicon Alley Insider) that “The iPhone is built for speed, but that’s not what you get with a CDMA iPhone. I’m not sure iPhone users are ready for life in the slow lane.”
First off, my thanks to AT&T for all but confirming that the iPhone is coming to Verizon. Secondly, boasting about your network speeds, is like me boating that I own a Ferrari that only runs half the time. I’ll take a solid, dependable, semi-fast connection over a faster, unreliable connection any day.
