Verizon iPhone 4 – no simultaneous voice and data

Here’s a bit straight out of the Engadget liveblog of the Verizon event this morning:

This means no Google Maps look-ups when your friend calls you up for a consult, and no background uploading of pictures or background downloading of apps while you yap. I’m sure there are a few use cases I’ve neglected to include, but the gist of it is that the Verizon iPhone may feel significantly different if you’re already used to data being a relatively uninterrupted stream on AT&T (if the signal is good enough).

[Update: this question has since been answered multiple times in the comments – thanks!] What I am wondering about, however, is how Wi-Fi affects things. This isn’t even specifically an iPhone question as much as it is about any CDMA devices on the Verizon network that also have Wi-Fi. I’m not entirely sure if Engadget meant “cellular data” or any kind of wireless data (whether it come through the cellular or Wi-Fi antenna), and the answer “same as a CDMA device” doesn’t say much to me, since I’m not well versed in the differences between CDMA and GSM (aside from the no cellular data and voice bit).

So is this as big a deal as I think this is? Any potential Verizon customers here a little less keen after hearing this news?

And please — if you know anything about whether Wi-Fi and voice will work at the same time, please chime in on the comments below or in the Verizon iPhone forum. I’m quite curious.
