Apple Pushes iOS 4.3 Beta to Developers

Apple has seeded iOS 4.3 beta to developers, coming in versions for iPad, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, 3rd generation iPod touch, 4th generation iPod touch, and Apple TV. Absent from the list, is the iPhone 3G and the second generation iPod touch, both of which have been receiving iOS 4.x updates up until this point.

First off, developers can now tap into AirPlay and stream video to devices that work with the service. The hotspot configuration panel we reported on yesterday, is in fact present in this build. Other minor things such as a hideous new FaceTime icon, and full-screen banner iPad compatible iAds.

Now, there are two new features coming that I’m excited about. First off, Apple is now adding the option of making the hardware switch on the iPad either function as a mute switch, or enable rotation lock like it did when the iPad originally shipped in April of last year. But, we’ve already reported on that.

The coolest new feature is Apple’s inclusion of four and five finger multi-touch gestures in this iOS update. Swiping either left or right with four fingers, switches between multitasking apps. Pinching with four or five fingers will close the active app and return the user to the Home screen.

It looks like iOS 4.3 is going to be another pretty big “minor” update. A number of major gripes that came from the iOS 4.2 update, are being addressed. However, there is still no word on AirPrint, and if Apple will be expanding
