One of the features announced alongside the Verizon iPhone yesterday, is the ability to use the device as a mobile hotspot, utilizing the phone’s existing cellular connection. This functionality is built into iOS 4.2.5, which ships with the Verizon iPhone.
Now, MacRumors is points out that several websites are reporting that an iOS update, version 4.3, will bring the a similar mobile hotspot functionality to GSM (AT&T) iPhones. However, it does seem that this functionality can be activated on a carrier-by-carrier basis.
You’d think that AT&T would be eager to add this functionality, so that Verizon wouldn’t have a competitive edge on them, however, it seems that AT&T is currently “evaluating” the feature, but has nothing to offer at this time. I’m shocked.
Remember, it was AT&T that was a year behind other carriers to bring USB and Bluetooth tethering to the iPhone. Most other GSM carriers had offered the feature since it was introduced alongside iPhone OS 3.0 in 2009. So, AT&T has a track record of dragging it’s feet on implementing new features.
