The iPad Lock Switch Returns!

In the land of things Apple has done wrong with iOS, there are very few that have irked me as much as them dumping the lock switch from the iPad in favor of using it as mute switch. Now I understand this was done to bring all devices in line so that all external buttons functioned for the same purpose, but honestly it was just a dumb move. Why?

Well, if you hold the volume down button for about a second, the volume mutes anyway. Plus anyone who has used an iPad for any length of time as a reader (web or book) knows that it takes little more than a sneeze to get the screen to start rotating around like it’s on merry-go-round. The switch was a very functional means to get that to stop, and in most cases when you’re using an iPad you want to set the orientation to match the activity you’re involved in. Sure you may do it occasionally on the iPhone but in my years of using one, It’s a much less common occurrence.

I’m not going to play the “Steve said” card here, but there was a time that Apple was perfectly happy with their decision and claimed there was no going back… Well, it looks like things have changed and we’ve given a very un-apple-esque choice! Along with the new iOS beta 4.3 released to developers today, the switch has been switched and you can now go into settings to rid yourself of the annoying double-click > slide > tap action required to lock the orientation.

I don’t know about you… But for my dollar, this news beats any lame Verizon news. 🙂
