Does Spotify’s New Partnership with Shazam Mean Service is Finally Coming to U.S.?

A new partnership between Shazam and Spotify has seen the music discovery service integrate a new function into its latest app update called “Play in Spotify,” which allows users to listen to full songs within the Spotify app on their devices. The new feature is available now to both iOS and Android users in the U.K., Sweden, Norway, Finland, France, Spain and the Netherlands. However, could this new partnership spell the imminent launch of Spotify in the U.S.?

Well, GigaOM’s Kevin Tofel certainly thinks so:

It doesn’t quite make sense to me that such a widely popular and available app like Shazam would have Spotify functionality if it was only useful in six countries, unless Spotify was about to flip the switch and let the music play in more places.

Tofel explains in his report today that the Spotify service is a massive success across the pond in Europe, with more than 7 millions subscribers since its launch in 2006. However, that 7 million is nothing when you compare it to the 50 million users of Shazam in more than 150 countries.

Tofel certainly makes a good point – why would Shazam introduce a new feature in to its application that only a small percentage of its users can take advantage of?

Spotify’s launch in the U.S. has certainly been a long time coming, mainly due to licensing issues with the record labels it needs on board. However, competitors such as Rdio, Pandora and Rhapsody have already managed to strike deals with the labels to provide music streaming services, and there’s no reason Spotify can’t do the same.

The new “Play in Spotify” feature is currently only available to users who have purchased the premium Shazam applications, but the company promises the feature will make it to the free version of its app later this year.

Will you be signing up if/when the Spotify service comes to the U.S., or have you already given up and found another streaming service? Let us know if the comments.
