Seemingly backing up Engadget’s previous report that the next-generation iPad will have a high resolution screen, MacRumors has released a pair of reports outlining a new higher performance GPU, and double resolution graphics in iBooks.
First up, the new Graphics Processor. Since the iPhone 3GS Apple has been using POWERVR SGX535 GPU from Imagination Technologies. However, in the new iOS 4.3 Beta Apple recently released, there are hints that Apple will be moving to the next generation SGX543 architecture for their future iOS devices.
The SGXVR543 is OpenCL compatible (allowing developers to use the GPU to for processing purposes), and can support multi-core processors for even better performance. It just so happens that Engadget’s report claims that Apple will be using a multicore processor in the next generation of iOS devices. Anyway, comparing the SGX353 and SGX534 both running at 200MHz, the SGX543 has a filrate of 1 billion pixels per second and 35 million polygons per second, as compared to the SGX353’s filrate of 500 million pixels and 28 million polygons per second.

Secondly, the high resolution graphics found in the iBooks app that were found back in August. MacRumors believes that Apple will take a similar approach as they did with the iPhone, and simply double the pixel density. That would bring the iPad from 1024×768 to 2048×1536 or a DPI of 260. This is lower than the iPhone 4’s 300 DPI, but if you consider that the iPad is larger and likely held farther away from the user’s face, the image quality will likely appear the same. Simply doubling the pixels also makes the math easier for developers to adjust to.
It’s pretty safe to assume that the next-generation iPad will have a higher resolution screen. Too many pieces are falling into place for it not to. The new iPad will also likely have a faster processor, SD card slot, and front and rear facing cameras.
