Quick Look: Last Fish for iPhone

Last Fish ($0.99)has a pretty simple premise: tilt your iPhone to maneuver a glowing white fish into good things like rings of light and bits of food, while making sure to dodge evil shadowfish and the toxic blobs of goo in the water. The animation for the titular fish really is quite astounding, and the fact that you can only ever see an inch or two ahead of you makes for a surprisingly atmospheric experience as you weave in and out of the shifting labyrinth of goo.

Unfortunately, the levels in Last Fish always feel like they go on for far too long. I always ended up feeling stranded at the end of each stage, as if the end couldn’t come soon enough.

In other words, the pacing in Last Fish just feels plain off. The obstacles tend to move far too slowly, there are often too many objectives to complete, and the first third of the game tends to be so slow and easy that there is no sense of tension, since the possibility of actually losing is so remote.

I’m not terribly sure how much more can or will be done for Last Fish, but I do think that the experience could definitely use a shot of adrenaline (especially since even the developer described it as an “action” game). Whether it be faster obstacles, shorter levels, or the addition of some sort of extra mechanic to give the player something more to do — a pretty big change will be needed to turn Last Fish into something truly exciting and entertaining, especially with so many other fish (err, games) in the sea (err, App Store).
