Just a day after we heard reports that Apple may be widening it’s scope and could discontinue more server-based products alongside the impending cancelation of the Xserve line. One such product that may see the axe, is Mac OS X Server.
Anyway, a MacRumors reader reportedly emailed Apple CEO Steve Jobs back in December, inquiring about the possible discontinuation of Mac OS X Server. Jobs’ responded with his usal terse style. He simply said “no.”
Here’s the purported email:
Q: If you are abandoning enterprise solutions by eliminating the Xserve, does that mean OS X Server is not far behind? It seems that way. I would hate to see that because I like the product.
A: No.

Like I said at the end of yesterday’s report, I suspect that Mac OS X Server will go away as we know it today. I suspect, the apps that differentiate Mac OS X Server, from just plain vanilla Mac OS X will be included with every copy of OS X, and will be found on the instillation disc for the people who need them. There’s no money in server software, or hardware for that matter, so I suspect we’ll see Apple slowly ebb out of the market.
