The iPad already can play HD quality video which is good enough, isn’t it? And why would Apple add a SD slot when they already have the camera connection kit? That’s $30 that they’re taking away from themselves. Maybe down the lime when they’ve sold enough but not now I don’t think.

Not because they can’t do it and yes it would look great. However that is just to much resolution to be practical. Can you imagine watching a video with as little resolution as even DVD? It would be tiny on the screen and look nasty if you scaled it full screen. Kinda like scaling a 640×480 video full screen on a 20″ monitor. Yuck.
