Verizon to Charge $20 a Month for Wireless Hotspot Functionality

Screen shot 2011-01-20 at 10.16.39 PM.pngMacworld is reporting that they have received confirmation from Verizon that the iPhone 4’s wireless hotspot feature will cost an additional $20 a month for 2GB of data, and an additional $20 for every GB over.

Raney said that Verizon iPhone owners will be able to take advantage of the 3G wireless hotspot feature for an extra $20 per month on top of the iPhone’s required voice and data plans–that’s the same price that applies to current Verizon smartphone owners.

Of course, this tidbit comes off the announcement that iPhone 4 is coming to Verizon network. One of the features announced alongside the device’s arrival on Verizon, is it’s ability to act as a wi-fi hotspot, sharing it’s cellular connection with up to 5 other devices. This hotspot feature will be built into iOS 4.3 and will be supported on a per-carrier basis.

To me, this strikes me as a nickel and dime move. If Verizon really wanted to gather more disgruntled AT&T customers, they would sweeten the deal further. Adding the hotspot functionality in to sweeten the deal I say. However, Verizon may be charging for this feature to prevent strain on their network.
