Less than three weeks after listing Pixelmator on Apple’s new Mac App Store, its developers report grossing a million dollars from the title
Well there’s a nice early success story for the shiny new Mac App Store. Pixelmator is described as a beautifully designed, easy to use, fast and powerful image editor for Mac OS X. And it’s a big hit on the new store – currently the fourth highest grossing title on the Mac App Store, trailing only Apple’s Aperture, iPhoto, and Pages apps. ** And now Angry Birds as well, the chart has changed slightly today.
It’s nice to see that the move by Pixelmator’s developers to go all-in on the Mac App Store has paid off for them …
Pixelmator’s developers decided to bank on the success of the new Mac App Store from the start, announcing plans to exclusively distribute its app online via the new store, phasing out direct sales.
The company also slashed the price of Pixelmator from $59.99 to a limited time offer of $29.99, in part as a concession to existing users who will need to repurchase the app to get downloads through the App Store.
The limited time offer is available to everyone however, and includes a free upgrade to the upcoming 2.0 release.
It’s also good to see that a $30 app can sell well in the new store – in this case 33,000 copies in just 20 days. It will be fascinating to see what happens when Pixelmator’s price is moved back up towards its pre Mac App Store price of $59.99.
You can find Pixelmator in the Mac App Store now.
