The winners of the 2010 Best App Ever Awards have been announced. I’m a big fan of these awards and I love the stated motto and goal for them:

Honor the best, not just the best selling

This year’s overall winner, as the Best App Ever is not a huge shocker. It’s the all-conquering Angry Birds. The rest of the winners list – spread across 33 categories and featuring an iPhone and iPad division winner for each – is as impressive as always in this third year of the awards history. Also very impressive is the fact that this year’s awards drew almost 500,000 votes from users around the world.

Here are some of the winners that caught my eye for various reasons:

— Reeder won the Best Publication App in the iPhone division. That’s sure to be a very popular choice among our writers here, who are huge fans of this app.

— Flipboard took three awards in the iPad division – for Most Innovative App, Best Visual Design, and Best News App. This is one of my favorite iPad apps and a richly deserving winner.

— Waze is the surprise winner for Best Navigation App in the iPad division. This will make James happy I’m sure – check out his epic, excellent review of Waze’s iPhone version here: http://isource.com/2010/08/30/review-waze-for-the-iphone/

— Instagram got Best Social Networking App in the iPhone division.

— iBooks is the only app from Apple themselves to win an award – for Best eBook app in both divisions. I’m amazed that none of the iWork suite for iPad – Keynote, Numbers, and Pages – won anything.

— Angry Birds not only won the overall Best App Ever for the year – it also won for Most Innovative Game (iPhone), Best Game Controls (iPhone), Best Casual Game (iPhone), Best Arcade Game (both), and Best Family Game (iPhone), for a whopping total of seven awards!

— Camera + won for Best Visual Design and Best Photography App in the iPhone bracket.

— 2Do won Best Productivity App in the iPhone division.

One of the things I like best about the winners list is that it includes quite a few apps I’ve never even heard of, and I’m an apps addict to put it mildly. This is exactly what these awards are intended to do – bring to light some of the very best apps that for whatever reasons may not have got all the attention they deserve. Two that I’d not seen before that particularly impressed me are:

Stack the States won the Best Kids App. This is one I’ll be trying out very soon with my daughter.

Filterstorm won for Best Photography App. This looks like a very powerful photo editing app, with a ton of features.

Next week the awards site will be running a huge promo codes contest, with codes for all of the winning apps up for grabs. All the more incentive to go see details on all the winners and to be sure to check in to the site again next week:
