so i reverted back to VZ navigator which in my opinion is the best navigator. fast search and loads up the maps quick once it loads the map you dont have to reload it even if you lose service (which happened quite a bit in rural areas)
its only 4 bucks a month im happy!
check out this iphone mount i bought. its amazing!

If I want to go out in the sticks, or really anywhere there isn’t 3G, I’m out of luck.

I am surprised that it performed that poorly, but I guess that is one of the drawbacks of having cloud-based mapping.

Considering how much room Navigon MobileNavigator takes up on my iPhone, I would probably be cool with StreetPilot just caching my route and the immediate area around it in advance. This would prevent the problems on long trips, but keep the file size down and insure the latest map updates.

RKW, as for your comments, I think a stand-alone GPS module will always be better in terns of location and response. The advantage of having the app is the portability, integrated Internet access, and easy input. There are definitely trade-offs. That said, I would be disappointed with that level of performance from the car mount accessory, too.

Couple of comments. Myself, I won’t be getting the iphone/garmin app until the maps are resident. That said, I have a nuvi 765t, and the tomtom app with the car mount. The additional gps chip in the TT car mount, is supposed to give much better sat reception. However, on a 3000 mile round trip this summer, I noticed my TT lost signal quite often. I was testing this app and car mount, against my Nuvi. The Nuvi NEVER lost signal. Mountains and trees seemed to have a prominent negative affect on my TT. Even though I like many of the features with the TT setup, I ended up going back to my Nuvi for the road. I was a bit surprised the TT mount with the additional sirf 3 chip didn’t perform better. Frankly, I am a diehard Garmin fan, and was a bit shocked, when they did their app with only over the air updates. I have their prevous Blackberry app, with similar functions, and it definitely has its limitations.

I agree with everything you said in your review however there is an issue which you probably did not have the opportunity to discover. Downloading navigation data on demand is a royal pain on a long trip. I recently went on a 500 mile round trip. Navigation was accurate BUT it seemed to download new map data every 30 miles or so. Each time, navigation (and music) was interrupted and the voice started chanting “recalculating .. recalculating” over and over again. As a result, I have to downrate the software significantly. I have now installed the TomTom program. Since it has all the map information installed, its response is quicker. I have not been on a long trip yet but I don’t foresee any big problems. There are many ways in which the TomTom software seems superior. I look forward to giving it a more thorough workout.
