Boy it feels like it’s been a long time since my iPhone 4 has been jailbroken. Just got it done again last night, as I have it running the latest 4.2.1 firmware and had no interest in going with an untethered jailbreak.
Thanks to the latest GreenPois0n jailbreak, I’ve got my iPhone 4 jailbroken again and untethered (meaning there is no need to re-jailbreak every time you reboot your iPhone). The version of GreenPois0n I used did not get Cydia – the essential jailbreak app store – installed properly. So I went with the Redsn0w (the Dev Team’s current jailbreak) over the top of GreenPois0n method recommended by iPhone Download Blog. So far, all is well for me with this method.
For those who are interested, here are the steps I took to jailbreak my iPhone 4 last night, starting out with it running the stock (non-jailbroken) iOS 4.2.1 firmware. Note this is just my condensed version of the outline given by iPhone Download Blog – perhaps best for those who are already pretty well-versed at jailbreak, as I am:
— Ran the latest GreenPois0n to jailbreak.
— Tried its Loader app just for giggles to see if it would install Cydia. It didn’t, just stuck on ‘Loading Sources’ – a known issue with GreenPois0n, at least as of yesterday.
— Downloaded Redsn0w latest beta for Mac – and made sure I had the iPhone 4.2.1 firmware .ipsw file around on my desktop to use with Redsn0w. If you need this file you can find it at iPhone Download Blog, iClarified, or elsewhere.
— Updated to the latest version of iTunes on my Mac.
— Fired up Redsn0w and pointed it at the iPhone 4.2.1 ipsw file when it asked on its opening screen, selected only ‘Install Cydia’ on the next screen and went through its standard jailbreak process
Both GreenPois0n and Redsn0w require you to put your iPhone into DFU mode right at the outset – but if you’re a seasoned jailbreaker that should be quick and easy for you.
If you’d like more detailed instructions on this jailbreak method, I suggest you take a look at iPhone Download Blog’s guide here:
So far – and it’s only been less than 24 hours – this jailbreak method has worked very well for my iPhone 4. I haven’t seen issues and Cydia is installed and working as well as it ever does.
I got lazy last night after getting jailbroken, and only installed a few apps:
— The absolute essential jailbreak app, SBSettings, for easy and quick toggling on and off of services.
— Infinidock – to allow unlimited number of apps to be added to my dock.
— VoiceActivator – the new tweak that looks like it may be what Voice Control always should’ve been.
Ok, so how about you all? Have you got your iDevices jailbroken on 4.2.1 untethered? Which jailbreak apps are you enjoying most these days?
