The Wi-Fi Sync 2.0 Mac beta is out now (Win 7 version coming “soon”), and you can pick it up the desktop client from this beta website. The update is available to all previous Wi-Fi Sync owners, but you’ll also be awarded access if you buy Wi-Fi Sync 1.1 on the Cydia Store right now.
Once you’ve got the beta client installed and set up, you’re going to want to add the http://dl.wifisyncapp.com/apt repo to your Sources in Cydia so that you can install the iPhone app.
Here are a couple of things to take note of before you get too excited, though:
- this is still a beta, so even normal functions may not work properly
- the app still looks pretty basic; it should eventually receive a bit of a UI makeover
- over-the-air 3G syncing isn’t in the public beta yet
- background syncing capability isn’t in the public beta yet
- you have to make sure to load WiFi Sync 2.0 on the Mac *before* iTunes
- if you try to update your iPhone firmware at a later date, you may have to uninstall the Wi-Fi Sync 2.0 Mac client to get firmware updates to go through (this is a suggestion based on personal experience)
That’s about it for the disclaimers, though. I’ve been using the beta for the last two days and am happy to report that it actually works with my iPhone (v1.1 didn’t). Pairing the iPhone with my Mac over Wi-Fi seems a lot more reliable this time around, and I’m delighted to have the option to go wireless again.
