Review: Triangular for iPhone

Triangular, a new puzzle game brought to us by the guys over at We are Colin, is now available in the App Store for $0.99.  If you’re a fan of puzzle games, I highly recommend this challenging matching game.  The concept is simple—rotate each triangle so that the colors of the points match accordingly with neighboring triangles.  There are 40 levels of increasingly more difficult puzzles, that offer a unique and imposing playing experience.

Even though the main concept of the game remains the same, the manner in which you get there evolves and becomes more ambitious.  In addition, your accomplishment is also judged by how fast you complete the task, and in your ability to finish in the least amount of moves possible.  To that extent, a rating system (silver, gold & platinum) rewards and appraises your accomplishment based upon your total number of moves and time taken to get there.  Here is where the real challenge lies. In addition, your high scores for each completed level are also saved so that you can track your ratings at any time.

As you progress, you are presented with new obstacles, including triangles that are locked down—depicted with chains, and moves where multiple triangles rotate at the same time.  I like to compare the thought process to chess, where you are forced into thinking two, three, four steps ahead to complete the task.  Furthermore, in later rounds there are white gems that are like wild-cards because you can match them up with any color to move on.

Overall, my first impression of Triangular is very positive.  I enjoyed the game-play, and found it to be fairly easy to learn.  My one complaint, though, is that I was able to move through the first 35 levels fairly easily.  When I say ‘move through’ I mean finish—not master in the least amount of moves, and in the quickest time possible.  For $0.99 you really can’t go wrong, though.  With extras like a catchy background beat, and color-blind game-play mode, it’s hard to believe that Triangular is really just 1.0 version game.
