AppleBitch (I swear I’m not making the name up) is reporting that iPod Classic supplies seem to be running low.
An excerpt:
The Apple Store shows that the silver iPod Classic now ships in 1-3 days, down from 24 hours last week. In addition, Best Buy has updated their website to say that the device is backordered for 1-2 weeks (last week it was shipped in 1 day) and Target also has it backordered for 2-4 weeks. Currently the shortage only seems to be affecting the silver colored model, the dark colored version appears relatively unaffected.
Apple very well may be bumping the capacity of the iPod Classic by using the 220GB Toshiba drives we reported on last month. Or, what I believe is the more likely event, Apple will soon be discontinuing the iPod Classic. It hasn’t seen an update in 18 months, and wasn’t even mentioned at last year’s iPod event, even though Steve Jobs said the company had an “all-new” iPod lineup.
There are great arguments for keeping, and for getting rid of the iPod classic. Some people really do need that much storage, while it’s likely not selling as fast as it’s other siblings, and Apple wouldn’t be above cutting the extra baggage loose. Look no further than the Xserve’s discontinuation.
