Android has Proven that there’s no need for a killer… WHY you might ask?… Android has already met and exceeded ios’ numbers both in the U.S. as well as worldwide. Apple makes a good phone… Android makes Great PHONES (plural)… and, most importantly, to each their own. Finally, let’s Stop the pissing contest… immediately. I really don’t care how ‘big’ your d%$k is. Now EVERYONE can choose the phone that suits THEIR (the consumer) wants & needs !!!

And failing to mention simultaneous voice and data and support for tethering show how little actual research you did for this article beyond your “it’s not an iPhone” epiphany.

I don’t hate the iPhone, it’s an awesome device, but if people actually took the time to compare the iPhone 4 and HTC Thunderbolt instead of buying an apple because it’s an apple, the Thunderbolt is a better phone on launch day. It makes sense, iPhone4 is a year old, Thunderbolt is new.

Someone who posts information on the interweb should take the time to do their homework before ignorantly blasting something because it’s not an iPhone.

Patrick, that statistic is from 2009, not 2010. The spread will be much more broad in 2010, with 300,000 total Android devices being activated daily for several months now.

If find that hard to believe with android apps increasing at 500% right now. When you are comparing IOS to android you have to remember there is only one phone using IOS and multiple using android. Real numbers for you:

http://www.phonedog.com/2011/01/31/android-surpasses-symbian-to-become-top-smartphone-platform-as-tablets-gain-ground/

here is some app store stats for you as well. Apple is ahead but not 99% ahead.

I can simply agree that the iPhone completely revolutionize the smartphone industry to ends we can only speculate. Android was cooking in the Google’s oven (or the original company that created it) when the first iPhone came out. Without either, we’d still be stuck with Blackberries and Microsoft, probably in the same user interfaces they had 2-3 years ago. I’m grateful for the competition and innovation from Google and Apple. I was within 3 months of switching to an iPhone back in the last qtr of 2009.. but then I caught wind of Android and liked the choices in models. The iPhone is standard. It has TONS of accessories that I’m envious about, but I’d trade a $99 alarm dock for the choice of growing bored with a touch screen and getting a keyboard Android device (or vise-versa). I like real-time widgets. I like ‘skins’. I like changing vendors and getting a different expierence, but still have my favority free and paid apps. I like NOT having to re-buy apps if I sync’ed iTunes incorrectly and lost everything.

I like choices. I like that Apple, for the most part, started this chapter in mobility.

Also agree that this battle is very good for consumers. Absolutely disagree with the idea that Apple is ‘getting creamed’ though. In terms of smartphone market share the two have run close and both are doing very well, better than all the rest. And that’s before the Verizon iPhone comes out in 48 hours – lets see how the shares in the US go then. Then there’s all the millions of iPod Touches that aren’t even counted in those numbers. And the tabloid market where Android is months behind the iPad and offering near zero competition at this point.

Oh, and here’s a little stat that’s a good indicator of strength of platforms – last year over 99% of app downloads were on iOS. Somewhere within the massive other 1% was Android.

I’d say Apple’s still ahead by some distance.

You iPhone/Apple folks don’t get it.. Its not a phone vs phone contest, its an ecosystem vs ecosystem contest. Its the same with PCs.. You don’t get excited about a single PC because PCs are not unique. Its all the same software and hardware with a different brand on it.. So compare Android vs iOS, that is what it’s all about.. You get excited about the iPhone because that is the only way you can get it. If you compare the two ecosystems Apple is getting creamed right now and it’s only the beginning. But what does it really matter? Both have their places in the market and each other are driving the companies to innovate and bring their A game. Result, massive win for the consumer!
