Hipstamatic for iPhone steps it up in latest update

The popular digital photography iPhone app Hipstamatic has made some bold and welcome moves in its latest update, dubbed version 200. The whole charm of the app is the sensation of using a traditional analog camera, with the choice of different lenses, flashes and films to create some instantly awesome images.

Unfortunately, till now the feeling of old school meant, as it was in the olden days, a decidedly unromantic wait for the film to “load” again after taking one picture, a tiny viewfinder in which you could not really focus or frame a picture, and a bewildering (at least for the uninitiated) cockpit of settings. This is what put me off using it regularly for point-and-shoot sessions. It was more like point-shoot-wait for an eternity (eventually solve a sudoku or complete a level on Angry Birds) before taking the next picture.

The app has been updated today. Apart from the usual bug fixes and system refinements, the developers have made some nice enhancements, implementing what they are calling Quicksta Snap Film queue system, enabling users to take up to 9 images in a row. Finally!

While the prints do slowly “develop” in the background, at least you’re not hampered. Flicking through your pics lets you share to the usual communities or send by email. I honestly can’t say if this was there before – I had never ventured that far into the app. In any case it’s sweet.

Lens: Jimmy

Flash: Off

Film: BlacKeys SuperGrain

Also a relief: tapping on the shopping cart icon now takes you to a concise overview of features, categories and downloads. The former 2 give you quick access to details on lenses, flashes and films. The latter shows in-app purchases that you download. The navigation is clean and appealing. It’s now easier to see which “paks” (themed films, flashes and lenses) you don’t yet own, tempting you (or maybe it’s just me) to complete your set.

And the viewfinder has been enlarged 🙂

With the update, Hipstamatic is offering a free limited edition Mac & Milk Fashion FreePak, including the Chunky Lens and Fashionista camera case, provided you register for a Hipstaccount first.
