I truly believe that if one subscribes content via one (any, e.g. Online, physical paper subscription, etc.), then one should be able to access it on any platform w/o additional fees. This desire would primarily regard physical newspaper/magazines, in my opinion.

Being able pick and categorize the content (hopefully mass and very thorough content) would be nice.

I agree, though, that it is too early to decide the fate of The Daily right now.

Agree that it feels like a work in progress but they are working on it. I’ll give it time. Frankly been quite happy with the content but I haven’t run into the auto video playing either. Hopefully that has been addressed because that should never happen.

I also found it slow. I already subscribe to the WSJ both online and print, why pay them more money. There is nothing in the daily that I can’t find elsewhere.

Can you just imagine this in a waiting room or morning restaurant where every table suddenly makes sound at different times and different sources???? What a disaster. That is NOT the experience someone wants from a newspaper OR magazine. It should always be the user’s choice and a soft mute switch should always be available (overlayed) on the source to allow muting BEFORE touching the item to have video.

I much appreciate your willingness to be critical, to reflect your personal taste and take on an app, etc.

In particular, I share your distaste of noise, loud unexpected sounds, etc. That is bad interface design.

In a similar let down, the Huffington Post’s app for the iPhone & iPod Touch is excellent, but its one for the iPad also relies on a pictorial-video based table of contents, showing on the opening screen only a couple of stories per category, but assaulting one’s senses with a dozen+ pictures of great diversity across different categories, making to hard to spot the news one wants to read.

Any app, especially news-centered ones, should always give the user an option to chose an MTV/USA Today pop style or an old-fashioned, thoughtful text-based one. HP could easily do that.

You know, “Faux” News and all that.

The Daily was going to have a hard time even if the things was the greatest thing since sliced bread.

I find it pretty good. I don’t get in a tizzy about stuff like this. Like “I GOT TO GET THIS OFF MY iPAD NOW!!!”

Very shortly, the free trial period will end, and we will all be faced with the question: Subscribe or no? For me, my go-to news app is still Fluent News – which gives me a plethora of news articles in categories that are configurable (and thus interest me), with pretty much as many articles as I can want/use at any given time.

Bob, for me, the question isn’t so much what they could do to fix the app, but what they might do to break it at this point. From where I sit, they are still experimenting. While that’s fine, I think that perhaps this should have been a beta rather than a subscription-based general release. There is no clear and convincing aspect of The Daily that has convinced me that it can/could/would/should replace any other news source – yet. If they manage to address the myriad of issues that I have identified in my last two missives on the topic, I’d be glad to give them a second chance. However, in its current state, it falls far short of acceptable for me. Your mileage may (and apparently does) vary. My question to you: Will you be a subscriber?

The app doesn’t work. I am in process to delete.

I too deleted it, reinstalled it after several days, then deleted it for the final time, yesterday.

This is the sort of junk app that belongs to the Android crowd. The Daily should not have even been allowed in the App store.

I don’t expect it to contain 1000 articles to read because frankly, I don’t have that kind of time. I expect them to put together some interesting content, that presents me with easy to read articles some of which I wouldn’t have found if not for having them delivered to me. That’s the connection, of course, to the newspaper format. In general, I think they have met that goal. And to the person who said that News Corp is a disgrace to Apple and that Apple made a “mistake” by allowing The Daily, I’m sorry, but its time to grow up. Apple is a business, and they are going to work with anyone that might advance their platform, especially in a completely new direction. I’m assuming this person doesn’t like Fox News, which is why they immediately write off the entire parent company. Too bad we’ve become so narrow minded.

In all honesty, News Corp is a disgrace to Apple. I know Apple doesn’t make that many mistakes, but this is probably one of them.

How did we arrive at the point where 2 weeks after a launch of a very new idea, that we’ve abandoned them because it made an unexpected noise. Turn the noise off, fix the carousel shakiness.. its not a bad read. its got interesting potential, and the interface is much superior to the 1990’s designs of other online newspapers. NYtimes Ipad app is a little quirky too, but they have better journalists.
My advice for you, step back and rethink what The Daily represents, and be proud of your early adoption status, and perhaps a little embarrassed about your primadonna response to its first few weeks after launch…
