Quick Mac tip: closing apps with Cmd-tab and Cmd-Q

Cmd-tab (Command key + tab) is the Mac equivalent of Window’s alt-tab, which displays the icons of currently loaded applications so that you can switch between them.

However, one great little detail I discovered while playing around today is that Cmd-tab also works with Cmd+Q (the global shortcut for quitting an app), so you can essentially use Cmd-Tab as an ultra-fast task manager for closing multiple apps.

I do this by holding on Cmd and tab, releasing tab, using the arrow keys to select an application, and simply tapping on Q to close whatever I selected. It’s a heck of a lot faster than switching between apps and closing them one by one, and it’s definitely faster than using the mouse to close things on the dock. Give it a shot!
