Apple.pro is reporting that Apple is testing three distinctly different next-generation iPhones, one of which that is equipped with a slide-out keyboard.
The other two prototypes are reportedly very similar to the current iPhone 4 and are said to follow the same template that the iPhone 3G and 3GS did, by keeping the same case design for two model years. That’s not to say the that the new iPhone would be without improvements. The report claims that the the camera would see an upgrade to an 8MP sensor, and the battery would be improved.
To the report’s credit, they repeatedly note that this is a prototype device. Apple.Pro also has a great track record with Apple rumors.
Now, time for my two cents. This won’t happen. It’s a novel idea, and the rumor has popped up from time to time ever sense the iPhone was introduced in 2007, but it’s not going to happen. Apple is too heavily invested in multi-touch. That’s not to say that the iPhone couldn’t use both, but Apple has pretty well drawn their line in the sand- no hardware input.
