Giffer for iPhone – Make Animated GIFs from Your Photos

Giffer

Giffer – Easy Photo Animation is a heck of a nice idea for an app:

Turn your photos into animated GIF images and easily share them with giffer!

Now you can make awesome GIFs right from your iPhone or iPod touch! Just use the camera app to take a handful of photos and then easily combine them into a single GIF file.

Here are its key features:

★ Copy and paste images from Safari or other apps
★ Control your animation’s frame speed, loop mode, and choose a background color (for animations that contain different sized images)
★ Re-order or delete animation frames at will
★ Rad, clean user interface
★ Label and save your animations in your GIF library for later sharing
SHARING FEATURES:
★ SMS/MMS (by copy/pasting into the iPhone’s Messages app)
★ Facebook
★ Twitter
★ Tumblr
★ Email

This app sounded like lots of fun to me, so I gave it a quick try this morning. Unfortunately I find it almost unusable, because the developers seem to have focused on some of the finer points while taking their eye off the basics.

The reason I say that is that you cannot select more than one photo at a time. So if you want to choose even, say, 3-6 photos to use for your animated GIF, it’s a needless pain in the ass to add them – as you have to do it one at a time, meaning you’re switching back and forth between Giffer and the Photos app, having to re-open your selected photo album each time, scroll to where your chosen photos are, tap the next one, add it to Giffer, and rinse and repeat.

At first I thought an easy workaround would be to paste multiple images into Giffer at once, as it supports pasting. No go. The app loads only the first of multiple pasted images – unlike apps like Pastebot it can’t handle pasting in multiple pics at once.

I made one little GIF with just three images, but after finding there’s no way to add multiple images at once I gave up on the app. Far too much of a nuisance to work with.

Hopefully the developers will figure out a way to add multiple images in soon and release an update, as this could be quite a cool app.

You can find Giffer in the App Store now, priced at $1.99. If you try it out, let us know what you think in the comments and tell me if you think I’m missing the boat on it.
