Light Peak Connectivity Coming To Apple Products Soon?

CNet is reporting that Apple is preparing to introduce a new “high-speed connection technology” in the near future.

Apple is expected to adopt this Intel technology in the near future–but likely use a name other than Light Peak, a source familiar with this aspect of Apple’s plans said. Intel has said in the past that the first products using Light Peak should appear in the first half of 2011.

Intel, the creators of the technology, has branded it as “Light Peak“, however, it seems Apple will be calling it by another name once they incorporate it into their products. Rumors of just Apple using Light Peak have been around since Intel introduced it a couple of years ago.

Also worth noting, is that Light Peak is faster than USB 3.0, which explains why Apple hasn’t adopted USB 3.0 yet. They’re waiting for the faster, standards friendly, technology, with the same connector as USB 2.0 devices, to make it to market. Some have suggested that Apple may even incorporate Light Peak into the new MacBook Pros expected to be released on February 24th.
