When the Verizon iPhone 4 was released early this month, nearly the only feature, other than the network, to set the device apart from the AT&T iPhone 4, was the ability to use the device’s connection as a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot for other devices.
AT&T has remained mostly quiet about this feature, but later announced this feature for other smartphones that they offer, but no word on wether this feature is coming to the iPhone. Couple this information with the fact that the Mobile Hotspot feature is built into iOS 4.3, leaving it up to individual networks to offer the service or not.
Anyway, a number of iOS 4.3 beta users are reporting that the feature just works with their already existing tethering plan from AT&T. iOS 4.3 is expected to be released to the public by the end of this month. I would strongly suspect AT&T makes an announcement, if their going to at all, around the same time of the OS release.
In short, at the moment it appears that AT&T isn’t charging for the privilege of using the mobile hotspot feature, but they’ve also said nothing in general about the feature to begin with.
