MacRumors is reporting that Apple has informed their retail partners that they have discontinued the MobileMe retail box, with existing supply to be sold as long as supply lasts. These boxes of course only contain an activation code, and are mainly used to draw attention to the service.
An excerpt:
Apple is reportedly working on an overhaul of its MobileMe service, potentially looking to shift to a free offering that would provide users with “digital lockers” for housing their music, photos, and videos. Consequently, the discontinuation of boxed MobileMe products could be paving the way for a sell-off of existing stock and a brief period of digital-only sales before transitioning to a free service.
MacRumors later updated the post and stated that Apple has pulled MobileMe from their online store all together. That is, you cannot buy a MobileMe subscription as a standalone product, or alongside a new Mac as you could previously. Apple is still offering 60-day free trials however.
To me, this suggests that Apple is gearing up for an announcement at their scheduled March 2nd event- MobileMe may finally be going free for all users.
