Apple Lead Designer Jonathan Ive Wanting to Move Back to England, Board Resisting?

The Sunday Times (via Cult of Mac) is reporting that the man behind Apple design, Jonathan Ive, is bumping heads with the Apple Board of Directors. That is, Ive wants to spend more time in England, where he’s originally from, but the board doesn’t see it the same way.

Reportedly, Ive has been held to Apple since 2008 by a “golden handcuffs” deal, that was reportedly worth £18 million. At the end of this deal, Ive could even reportedly leave Apple if he so chose. That said, Ive has even offered to commute from the UK, but the Board still seems unwilling to budge.

A friend of the family told The Sunday Times: ‘Unfortunately he is just too valuable to Apple and they told him in no uncertain terms that if he headed back to England he would not be able to sustain his position with them.’

Ive has been with Apple since 1992, and is credited with being the lead designer behind such iconic products as the original iMac, iPod, iPhone, iPad, and so on. You can bet Apple wants to hold onto him.

Now, I was hesitant to report on this. It’s really none of the public’s business what Ive wants to do. However, he is such an iconic part of Apple’s culture, he deserves some sort of lip service.
