MobileNotifier beta 3: an interesting new iPhone notification extension [Jailbreak]

If you’re not satisfied with Notified Pro (which hasn’t seen an update in a while) or LockInfo for your alternative push notification needs, you might want to check out MobileNotifier after beta 3 runs its course. I read about the jailbreak extension on iClarified for the first time last night, and it looks like a really fresh take on iOS notifications.

Peter Hajas’ MobileNotifier features a little dashboard above the multitasking bar for notifications, relatively unobtrusive pop-ups just below that status bar (shown above), and a lockscreen widget that shows you how many notifications you have waiting for you. Unfortunately, since this is a beta, there are still a number of bugs to work out, and I had some major issues getting MobileNotifier to work properly on my 3GS on 4.2.1. I was unable to turn my iPhone alarm off this morning and was also completely unable to answer phone calls until I uninstalled MobileNotifier through Cydia.

There are also some minor conflicts with LockInfo, since the MobileNotifier widget actually draws itself over LockInfo and uses its own dashboard to determine whether notifications have been seen or not. Fortunately, LockInfo’s developer, David Ashman, has expressed interest in working with Hajas to crack down on some of the bugs, so better MobileNotifier <-> LockInfo synergy shouldn’t be too far off now.

To repeat myself one last time: I do think this extension holds a lot of promise, but you’ll probably want to wait until the next beta before giving it a shot. However, if you hate people that give warnings and want to try everything yourself, add this source to Cydia (http://phajas.xen.prgmr.com/repo) and see for yourself 🙂
