Steve Jobs is on stage introducing the new iPad 2.
This is information just coming in from the keynote in progress, but Apple has introduced the iPad 2, with an all-new design, an Apple A5 processor, and both rear and front-facing cameras.
The new iPad is 33% thinner than the one it is replacing at just 8.8mm thick. For comparison, the iPhone 4 is 9.3mm thick. Even though it is thinner, iPad 2 still offers the same 10 hour battery life.
The iPad two will also come in two colors, white and black, both of which will be available from day one. Apple is also offering two iPads to work with both Verizon and AT&T’s networks.
The iPad 2 comes in the same price points as the device it’s replacing $499/$599/$699 for Wi-Fi only models and the same $629/$729/$829 all at the same 16/32/64GB capacities and will ship on March 11th in the U.S., and 26 more countries on March 25th.
HDMI out is now being offered via an accessory cable that cost $39. All apps are supported, and up to 1080p quality.
Apple also introduced a cover for the iPad 2 that adds little extra weight and bulk while covering the screen. It will also clean the screen when slid in and out of the case, and when opened it will automatically sign into the iPad for you. Very cool.
Apple is also introducing iOS 4.3. Wi-Fi hotspot is coming to all iPhone 4s. iPad 2 will have Photobooth functionality similar to the Mac. Of course, FaceTime is being offered and works with any iPhone 4, current-generation iPod touch, and Mac.
Apple has made a version of iMovie for the iPad. Looks great. A lot of new sharing options are built in: YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo etc.
iMovie will be available March 11th, for $4.99
Now, Apple is showing off Garageband for iPad.
Garageband for iPad will be available on March 11th for $4.99.
Overall, a good update. Have thoughts on the announcements? Leave a comment!
