Today Apple introduced the iPad 2. Here’s what you need to know.

The new iPad is 1.3lbs compared to the 1.5lbs device it’s replacing. It’s equipped with Apple’s A5 chip, which is touted as being up to 2X as fast at it’s predecessor with 9X graphics performance (still no word on RAM, my guess is 512MB). The new iPad also has two cameras one in the front for FaceTime calls (with all other FaceTime devices) and one in the back that shoots HD video. All of this while being 33% thinner than the original iPad. That means iPad 2 is 8.8mm thick compared to say, the iPhone 4’s 9.3mm thickness. All of this while maintaining it’s famous 10-hour battery life.

Other cool introductions include what Apple calls “Smart Covers”. These covers attach to the iPad magnetically, and only cover the screen. Opening and closing the cover will automatically wake or sleep the iPad. Apple also introduced an HDMI out cable which will allow users to connect, say, an 1080p screen to their iPad. Lastly, Apple introduced iPad version of their Garageband and iMovie applications, both of which will be available on the App Store on March 11th for $4.99

iPad 2 comes in the same Wi-Fi only 16/32/64GB models for $499/$599/$699 and 3G models (both for AT&T and Verizon) in 16/32/64GB flavors for $629/$729/$829. iPad 2 will be made available on March 11th in the U.S. and March 25th for 26 other countries.
