iPhone Destined To Fail, Say Industry Pundits

While this may look more like a headline from The Onion than iSource, it’s not.  I just happened to stumble across an article published after the announcement of the original iPhone that I hadn’t seen before and the historical retrospect is too delicious not to share.  This particular article fails on almost every point in staggeringly horrific fashion.   Ready to get your giggle on?

In this article from Bloomberg writer Matthew Lynn, the iPhone is doomed to failure as an Apple fanboy-only toy.   Here are some of the more interesting observations:

 

The iPhone is nothing more than a luxury bauble that will appeal to a few gadget freaks. In terms of its impact on the industry, the iPhone is less relevant.

“The iPhone will not substantially alter the fundamental structure and challenges of the mobile industry,” Charles Golvin, an analyst at Forrester Research Inc., said in a report this month.

Apple is late to this party. The company didn’t invent the personal computer or MP3 player, but it was among the pioneers of both products. Yet there is no shortage of phones out there. There are already big companies that dominate the space, all of whom will defend their turf. That means Apple will have to fight hard for every sale.

Apple will sell a few to its fans, but the iPhone won’t make a long-term mark on the industry.

 

Of course, similar predictions were posted before the launch of the iPad as well, and they fared about as well as this collection.   I think it goes almost without saying that if Apple sold iPhones to only a few of its fans, that it’s got pretty much the entire world as its fan base.
