The headline above is misleading because Byword has only just come out and was likely always a fairly minimal application, but I just drank a tasty little tetra pak with ‘50% more real juice’ and am feeling both refreshed and inspired by percentage-based descriptions.
Inspiration also happens to be what Byword’s no-distractions interface is likely to help you find. On-screen elements like menus and title bars are hidden in full-screen mode and many actions are shown with little context-sensitive pop-overs, like the ones on an iPad. In fact, Focus mode, one of Byword’s major features, reminds me a lot of the popular iA Writer for iPad ($0.99), which has a very similar function to help you concentrate on just a few lines of text. Unlike iPad apps, however, this Mac app can handle both plain and rich text.
I’ll likely pass on Byword because I already own WriteRoom and OmmWriter, but it’s on sale right now on the Mac App Store for just $2.99. If it looks intriguing, it’d be best to snap it up now before the prices goes up to $4.99 in a few days.
