Report Claims 70% of iPad 2 Customers Are New to iPad

Fortune is reporting on a survey conducted by Gene Munster of Piper Jeffray, wherein he asked 236 iPad 2 customers in New York and Minneapolis, finding that 70% of them were new to the iPad. This of course suggests strong growth for Apple in the tablet market.

Here’s what Munster had to say about his findings:

“We believe this shows Apple is expanding its base of iPad users, which is critical to maintaining its early lead in the growing tablet market. As the user base grows Apple’s lead widens, and the company has a proven track record of building unmatched brand loyalty, which we believe will be a potent combination as the tablet market evolves.”

I hate to say it, but I think 70% is a little high. I’m no statistician but I think Munster’s sample of 236 people, although more than I would bother to ask, is a small sample, and may not be representative of the entire iPad-buying population.

Still, Apple is doing very well with the iPad 2 launch, with the device selling out at many locations.
