Microphone Quality Differences Found Between Various iPad 2 Models

iLounge is reporting that sound quality differences have been found between various Wi-Fi and 3G iPad 2 models. The Wi-Fi only models appear to have better sound quality, which seems be due to the aluminum casing. Whereas the microphone port is located on the black plastic radio strip on the 3G models. Even then, it appears that the GSM 3G iPad 2 has slightly better sound quality to it’s CDMA counterpart. In case you were wondering, the microphone is located in the top center, and on the 3G models, that runs right through the center of the black, plastic, radio strip.
An excerpt:

Perhaps due to this change in materials, the Wi-Fi model offers markedly cleaner audio than that of the 3G, which sounds slightly muffled and echo-prone as a result. Curiously, we found the GSM 3G model’s audio to be slightly preferable to that of the CDMA model, which seemed to suffer the issues more severely.

The sound quality issues are most noticed when the user has the device facing them, you know, like you normally would. That means, when doing things like FaceTime the sound quality could drop. There was no mention on how bad the sound quality drop is.

Long story short, the black plastic radio strip on the 3G iPad 2, doesn’t’ seem to carry sound as well as the all-aluminum Wi-Fi models.
