Quick iOS 5.0 wish: flagging e-mails within Mail

 

Here’s a quick wish for the next version of iOS: the ability to flag e-mails within the Mail app.

There are two reasons I think this is a reasonable little update to expect:

  • The default Mail client on the Mac already supports flags for marking important e-mails, so why shouldn’t iOS get the same treatment?
  • Setting Gmail up as an IMAP account within Mail actually shows starred messages as flagged ones on my iPhone. I’m not terribly sure whether this is a native iOS 4.2.1 feature or something from the Mail Rules jailbreak extension, but I’m hoping it’s native, and if it is, then flagging support is already halfway there. If Mail can display flagged messages, it shouldn’t be too much to expect to flag straight from the device.

As it stands now, the only way to flag Gmail messages from my iPhone is to load up the Gmail web app and star items from in there, and I think there really should be a better way.
