Apple’s Chief Designer Jonathan Ive Profiled, Reportedly Not Leaving for UK

The Daily Mail has written up a profile of Apple’s Chief designer, Jonathan Ive, the designer behind some of Apple’s most successful products, such as the iMac, iPod, iPhone, and iPad. The article delves deep into the life of the designer, who is notoriously private.

But more interestingly, the peice refutes recent claims that Ive was looking to return to his home country of England while still maintaining a role at Apple.

It is hard to know what is the greater intrigue: recent conjecture that he is preparing to walk away from Apple to relocate to his beautiful Grade II-listed mansion in Somerset so his children can be educated in the UK (false – he is not, and the property is now standing empty); that he will step out of the shadows and assume Steve Jobs’ role when the great man stands down (highly doubtful); or what – or perhaps more accurately who – propelled him to leave for the U.S. in the first place and deny Britain the talents of one of the most influential designers of the modern age.

Ive wouldn’t take on the role of CEO for the world. He likes working on design, and would rather someone else run the company and operations. Now, do I think Ive will remain at Apple for the rest of his career? I doubt it. But for now, and for the foreseeable future, Ive will remain with Apple.
