Apple has announced that Bertrand Serlet, the Senior Vice President of Mac Software Engineering will be leaving Apple. Serlet plans to “focus less on products and more on science”, but it’s not known at this time where Serlet is headed.
Here’s a quote from Serlet:
“I’ve worked with Steve for 22 years and have had an incredible time developing products at both NeXT and Apple, but at this point, I want to focus less on products and more on science,” said Bertrand Serlet, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering.
In case you didn’t know, Serlet goes all the way back to the days of NeXT, and followed Steve Jobs over to Apple after the acquisition in 1997.
At any rate, Serlet will be replaced by Craig Federighi, who is currently Apple’s vice president of Mac Software Engineering. Federighi also started at NeXT, but later worked for Ariba, then coming to Apple in 2009. Federighi has been leading the Mac Software team since, which will reportedly make the transition of roles much easier.
Jarring news. Serlet has been a lot of fun to watch over the years, with his occasional appearances at Apple keynotes. Most memorable was his jab at Windows Vista at WWDC 2006.
