Several US Senators Asking Apple To Remove DUI/Speed Trap Apps From App Store

apples-app-store-icon-o.jpgABC News is reporting that Senators Harry Reid, Charles Schumer, Frank Lautenberg, and Tom Udall have sent a letter to Apple, Google, and RIM asking them to remove all DUI and Speed trap apps, claiming that it was a public safety issue. From the senators point of view, these apps were designed to do nothing more than allow users to avoid police checkpoints, and thus make it easier for drunk drivers to get away.
Here’s a quote from the letter:

“We know that your companies share our desire to end the scourge of drunk driving and we therefore would ask you to remove these applications from your store unless they are altered to remove the DUI/DWI checkpoint functionality,”

On the flip side, people such as CEO of Phantom Alert claim that this is an overreaction, and these apps do nothing more than the police themselves. That is, issue PSA alerting people know that the police have set up checkpoints in their area.

I wonder if these companies will simply blow the letter off, until they are forced to do something by law, or if they will comply without question.
