Championship Manager (the PC version) is a game that years ago ate up enormous chunks of my life. I would sequester myself away for entire weekends to try to produce treble-winning sides. I’d see a player on TV in a pub and casually mention to a friend how he had never played that well for me when I managed him at Leeds – and all sorts of crazy stuff like that.
So CM 1980s Legends caught my eye immediately when I noticed it was recently release for the iPhone. How could it not? It’s Championship Manager, on the iPhone (which has been in the App Store for a while) but now it’s a shiny new 80’s legends version.
And that screencap above from the game. Seeing that AC Milan shield gets me thinking back on their spectacular late-80’s team, maybe the best squad I can ever remember watching. So much amazing talent on that team. The Italians like Baresi, Maldini, Donadoni. Best of all was their Dutch contingent though – Van Basten, Rijkaard, and the incomparable Gullit.
Oops, enough nostalgia – here’s a slice of the game’s App Store description:
The 1980s have returned and now is the chance to manage the decade your way.
*Please note, 1980s Legends only works with iPod Touch 3rd Gen (09/2009 – onwards), iPhone 3Gs, iPad & iPhone 4*
Big haircuts, the home internationals, English players going abroad and mobile phones everywhere…sound familiar? The 1980s are coming back round again and now is your chance to relieve the decade your way.
Pick your favourite club from clubs in England, Spain, and Scotland before diving in and start managing your favourite players of the 1980s.
Championship Manager 1980s Legends also features illustrated news stories from throughout the decade, as they happened. With multiple start dates, you can chose exactly when you want to drop into the decade of big hair and tiny shorts.
Features include;
> Authentic database packed with all the big names from through the 1980s
> Packed with hundreds of genuine news stories from the decade, all illustrated with authentic photo’s from the time courtesy of PA Photos.
> Multiple start dates, pick from 3 different start dates for the 1980s season
> 1980s retro interface, really immerse yourself in the era.
> Social Media – Using OpenFeint you can earn achievements in game, add your Facebook and Twitter accounts to publish updates from within the game and tell the world how you’re getting on.
> And more including; custom formations, match day, game centre support as well as full & commentary only match engine
Two bad things from my perspective on this one: it’s not available in the US App Store yet (though hopefully will get here sometime) and it is ‘just’ an iPhone version. It’s not a universal app, and I think Championship Manager really lends itself to the bigger iPad screen, though I suppose you don’t play this one for the graphics, so playing in 2X mode may be fine.
Here’s a UK App Store link for CM 1980s Legends; it’s priced at £1.79. If you get a chance to play it I’d love to hear what you think of it.
