I still don’t actually think the iPad 2 can really compete with the likes of dedicated next-gen consoles without having some actual hardware buttons, but I’m open to being surprised.

I have the Digital AV cable, and my only complaint with playing Real Racing 2 HD and other iPad games has been the black bars. I figured Apple would have to make some changes or additions to iOS for native widescreen support with the AV Cable, but evidently not. This is big news for game developers, and I’m sure it has gotten the attention of console manufacturers.

Despite the lack of widescreen, Real Racing already looks better than anything on my Wii. With the performance of the A5 and the ability for developers to push 1080p gaming to an HDTV, it may not be too long before we see games that being to rival the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Couple this announcement with the recent Apple Smart TV and AirPlay licensing rumors, or the possibility of wireless HD gaming through Apple TV and AirPlay, and it looks like Apple is finally going to make the leap from a mobile gaming platform to a full-on console competitor.
