Jim Dalrymple of The Loop is reporting that Apple will not introduce any new hardware at this year’s World Wide Developers Conference, the dates of which were just announced today- June 6th-10th. The reason this news is so jarring, is that Apple has been introducing iPhone hardware updates at every WWDC since 2008 with the introduction of the iPhone 3G.
Dalrymple:
Apple closed the door this morning on any speculation that it would announce new hardware at its Worldwide Developers conference saying it would focus on iOS and Mac OS.
Apple’s apparent focus on software in its WWDC announcement backs up what my own sources are saying about the annual conference. That is, expect a software show in 2011, not a hardware event.
To be clear, that is none of Apple’s promotional material suggest new hardware, which is what Dalrymple had been hearing- no new hardware at this year’s WWDC. This is also a balancing act. Dalrymple did not rule out the introduction of an iPhone release this summer, just that it will not be announced at WWDC.
That said, Macotakara has chimed in, claiming that the “iPhone 5” as it’s known, will not be introduced before the end of Apple’s fiscal 2011, which lands in late September for those of us not on Apple’s Board.
In sum, no new hardware (read: iPhone) at this years WWDC, but if you read between the lines one might be introduced sometime this summer outside of WWDC. However, a more likely scenario is an iPhone release this fall for the holiday rush.
